Our Youth Programs Temple Israel provides a youth group opportunity for all school aged Jewish children and teens in Volusia and Flagler Counties. This opportunity is offered regardless of their familys affiliation or non affiliation with a synagogue. The purpose behind these youth groups is threefold. The first is education, teaching children and helping young people practice the precepts of Conservative Judaism. The second is to provide a venue for social interaction with other Jewish children. Third, the youth group activities are fun! USY: United Synagogues Youth meets the needs of 9th through 12th grade. Local events are offered monthly. Members can also participate in regional and international convention events as well as a six weeks summer tour visiting synagogues and Jewish families around the United States. Participation offers these young people an opportunity to implement Jewish practices into their life. Also, lifetime friendships can be forged with other Jewish young people while a teen develops independence and an expanding knowledge of our greater Jewish community. KADIMA: Children from 5th through 8th grade deepen their learning about Judaism while they participate in social and team building activities. Through age appropriate and fun events, they also have the opportunity to form friendships with other Jewish children. In addition to local events, they, too, can participate in a regional convention and a theme park event during their years membership. They are encouraged to maintain not only local friendships, but also long distance acquaintances through special combined events and family organized personal contact. YAD BYAD: Young children from Kindergarten through 4th grade are invited to participate in age appropriate fun activities with other Jewish children. Parents are also encouraged to form acquaintances with other area Jewish families so their children can maintain their friendships and social activities. Events are held monthly. These are organized by geographical location with one group meeting in the Daytona Beach area extending further south into Port Orange and with another group meeting from Ormond Beach extending further north into Palm Coast. If you have or know of any Jewish children and/or teens, please contact Barbara F. Steinberg, Ph.D., Temple Israel Youth Commissioner, through the office (386) 252-3097.
